YWCA Cambridge is HOME.
YWCA Cambridge is HOME.
Dear Friend of the YWCA Cambridge,
The YWCA Cambridge is housing assistance and community space, but is also much more. Each year the YWCA Cambridge’s Family Shelter and Tanner Residence combined are HOME to more than 150 single women and mothers with their children who otherwise would be homeless or living in unsafe, unhealthy surroundings.
Since 1911 the YWCA Cambridge has been located in Central Square and has provided safe, secure, affordable accommodations for indigent single women and more recently homeless mothers with their children. In fact, the YWCA Cambridge is one of the area’s oldest and largest housing providers for women.
Often our residents have faced significant life challenges that have caused them to need our structured housing environments where they receive guidance and support to help enhance their life skills and guide them toward self-sufficiency.
YWCA Cambridge is HOME to the most desperate and vulnerable among us. Our Tanner Residence was HOME to Mary* for more than 20 years after her abusive husband beat her so badly that she was left with permanent brain damage as well as no financial or family support, and nowhere else to turn. Out of options and after a lifetime of suffering Mary came to the YWCA Cambridge Tanner Residence where she found what she needed most -- safety, security and unwavering support. She found a place to call HOME, where she gave as much as she received through her generous, giving spirit and actions.
Unfortunately, Mary passed away this past spring, but she left behind a community of women who cared about her, supported her and who remember and miss her. For Mary and for many of the women who live in YWCA Cambridge housing, we provide more than a place to stay. We provide a HOME filled with compassion and mutual respect. We offer an empowering place where the most vulnerable among us matter and no one is left behind.
Operating YWCA Cambridge housing costs money. Although, we receive financial support from other sources, this year we need to raise $30,000 by December 31, in order to keep pace with necessary spending. We hope that as you plan your year-end giving and your 2017 charitable contributions, you will remember the YWCA Cambridge, especially our Tanner Residence and the Family Shelter, the places more than 150 single women and mothers with their children call HOME.
